Competition Process and Brief
About
the Competition
The competition is a hybrid, both open and invitational, with a nominal
registration fee of $60.
Participants must be professional architects with at least five years professional experience. Teams of architects and developers may submit.
Participants can select one of three model sites (which have been submitted by city planners from the municipalities of Scottsdale, Tempe and Phoenix, Arizona) for their design proposal.
Submissions will first be reviewed by a Technical Jury of area experts and advisors, who will send its scoring on to the Design Jury.
The Design Jury will award three monetary prizes of $8,000; $4,000 and $2,000.
Ineligibility/conflicts of interest
Ineligible to participate in this competition are: employees and board
members of the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and the Scottsdale
Cultural Council (and its affiliate organizations) and their immediate
family; members of the project advisory committee; members of the technical
and design juries and their immediate family and/or architectural firms;
sponsors and sponsoring corporations; staff members of the planning departments
at the cities of Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe and their immediate family.
Staff members of a sponsoring corporation may independently
submit to the competition as individual participants in teams that include
others not employed by the sponsoring corporation/firm. Strips to Flip
Selection
Competitors are instructed to select one of three potential sites as the subject of their design proposal. The selected sites are located in Tempe, Scottsdale, and Phoenix.
Submission
Requirements
Entrants are required to submit two 30” x 40” presentation boards that clearly document their team’s proposal, and a brief technical statement outlining the nuts-and-bolts of their scheme. Questions and Answers
Registered entrants may seek clarification or submit questions to the competition advisor via email (cjones@joneskroloff.com) over the course of the competition. All answers will be posted in a fair and equitable way. Note: the question and answer section is no longer available.
Due Date
The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art must receive all submissions by 5:00pm MST on March 31, 2008.
Selection Criteria
Design Jury
Submissions will undergo an initial, technical review followed by a design jury. The purpose of the Design Jury is to assess the design quality of each submission and choose the strongest design ideas. The Design Jury will select the prizewinners and any identify any projects they deem worthy of an honorable mention.

Selection Criteria
The design jury will review the work based on the:
-originality of the proposal’s design vision;
-responsiveness of the proposal to the competition’s objectives;
-responsiveness of the proposal to the site and the context of the Strip;
-quality and clarity of presentation materials;
Prizes
The jury will award three cash prizes:
First Prize $8,000
Second Prize $4,000
Third Prize $2,000
The jury may also award an unspecified number of Honorable Mentions, as they see fit. Honorable Mentions will not carry a cash prize.
